From cultural considerations to reflective questions to classroom activities, this text makes learning the ‘what and why’ of counseling lead beautifully to the next steps of ‘how’.

— Elisabeth Bennett, Gonzaga University

Theories of Counseling is a must-have book for students, faculty, and therapists. The attributes of this book are many and range from essential knowledge and skills to the implementation of theory. This text, composed of 18 chapters, not only provides a comprehensive, well-grounded focus on counseling theories, but in addition, the book is holistic in approach, skillful in organization, and creative in explaining the contents of theory. This book is a ‘winner’. I highly recommend it.

— Loretta Bradley, PhD, LPC, LMFT. NCC, Paul Whitfield Horn Professor, Texas Tech University, Former President of the American Counseling Association (ACA)

Providing conceptual structure and creative humanity, author Samuel T. Gladding offers readers exceptional insight into major theories of therapeutic practice. This text is highly readable and applicable, offering multiple ways to assist the reader to envision the theory in practice while concurrently providing foundation concepts that are often included in licensure exams. A tremendous resource for training and practice!

— Colette Dollarhide, The Ohio State University

This must-have primer guides students through the key individual and systemic theories and provides multicultural perspectives within and beyond the U.S. Sam Gladding challenges students to apply what they are learning and bridges the all too familiar gap between theoretical knowledge and conceptualization. I cannot wait to use the reflective questions and classroom activities in our theories course.

— LoriAnn S. Stretch, William & Mary
