Confronting Ethnic White Christian Nationalism

How the Alternate Right Is Redesigning America

Chuck A. Baker

This book uses a quantitative-statistical approach to examine the impact of the White Christian nationalist movement on American society, focusing on its influence on social institutions. Why has a plurality of citizens in the US supported nationalistic, inequitable, oppressive political philosophies? Chuck A. Baker argues that citizens become more receptive to nationalism when it is presented in racialized and religious terms, when racial and religious segregation is made acceptable by invoking fear that forces citizens to choose and accept a zero sum perception of winning for their survival, and by tying it to a religious context makes ethnic nationalism less unpleasant through the implication that it is divinely ordained. By exploring the interaction between ethnic nationalism and Christian nationalism and in a variety of social institutions including government, media, education, military, and economy, Chuck A. Baker reveals the justifications and rationalizations that contribute to making right-wing politics appealing to some people.

Confronting Ethnic White Christian Nationalism provides a comprehensive account of how and why the coalition of White Christians and supporters of far-right nationalism has transformed America into a MAGA country. Professor Baker investigates the strategy of White Christian nationalists to control the current agenda of the Republican Party. In doing so, he analyzes the political and economic motivations of the people supporting authoritarianism, racism, xenophobia, sexism, and violence. He also demonstrates the damaging impact of White Christian nationalism on the core democratic values and institutions. Fake news, culture wars, anti-migrant phobia, as well as the increasing propensity to use violence (from protests to domestic terrorism) are undermining the very nature of US democracy. This is an especially timely book that ought to be read by anyone bewildered by our current political moment.

— Ariane Chebel d'Appollonia, Rutgers University–Newark

Confronting Ethnic White Christian Nationalism: How the Alternative Right Is Redesigning America offers a fresh sociological view of White Christian Nationalism. Chuck Baker takes the reader on a very matter of fact journey from the beginning of this phenomenon to our current time. Whether you are a student, faculty member or just interested in learning more about how White Christian Nationalism came to be in the United States, I highly recommend this book. In fact, it should be required reading in high school and post-secondary institutions.

— John B. Craig, West Chester University of Pennsylvania
